He’s the founder of one of the most successful dance labels of all time, regularly DJs at the world’s most prestigious venues and festivals and has – according to Simon Marlin of the Shapeshifters – “the best ears in the business”. We can only assume that Marlin was referring to his ability to hear the potential in a record from several miles away rather than the shape of his aural organ, but of one thing we are left in no doubt; Simon Dunmore is at the absolute top of his game.

Now Dunmore – after putting together the latest instalment in the In The House compilation series; Ibiza ’10 – is stood proudly at the helm of the good ship Defected, ready to guide them thought a second successive season hosting Saturday nights at Pacha. However, it’s not all been plain sailing, as a lack of stand-out records and difficulty in putting a theme for the night have both had to be overcome in order to produce the goods, but Dunmore’s pretty confident he’s cracked it. We caught up with him to talk producers, the enduring appeal of Ibiza and the rewards that come with putting in that extra effort…

GROOVENITE.COM: What are your passions outside of dance music?
SIMON DUNMORE: Unfortunately in these times, I don’t really have the time to indulge the passions that I would like to get involved in because first of all, my job is my passion. It takes up an enormous amount of my time. When I’m not DJing or doing AR for Defected, I have my family to consider. But if I do have another passion, then it’s football. It’s a bit of a lads’ thing and my team aren’t doing so well right now. I support QPR and they are terrible at the moment, so it means I can enjoy watching other teams. It’s a real release for me, I get rid of a lot of pent up energy. I love to see Arsenal win and I love to see Chelsea lose.

What’s the magic ingredient?
It is, in these days and in these times, really hard for records to stand out. Everybody uses the same programmes, the same presets, the same sound. To me, the majority of music I listen to these days is extremely formulated, pretty soulless and dull! Or I find it quite soul destroying listening to records on Beatport and all sorts of tracks I get sent because they all sound so similar. I think that’s why they all come and go, they have no longevity, there’s nothing to make them stand out. If you want your records to be noticed, to have any chance of rising above all of the mayhem that is dance music at the moment, you’ve just got to put a little bit of time into the production, into your beats, into the musicality of it. Beats and bass lines, there’s a million tracks like that and you’ve got no chance if that’s all you’re going to do. So just put that extra 10%, actually no, put that extra 70% in to it and you’ve got a better chance.

For you, at this moment in time, who the most exciting producers?
That is really difficult. I’m going to mention Dennis Ferrer again, who I’ve mentioned for the last four or five years. The reason is every year, he comes up with what, I believe, is an exceptional record. This year he has surpassed himself with ‘Hey Hey’, a massive record for the last six months and something I think is going to run all the way through the summer. There are some new kids around, people like Joris Voorn who has some really well produced and solid productions. But I’d like to see him put something on top of what are amazing grooves and well produced tracks, I’d love to see him put a song or something that takes it that little step further. The musicality of someone like Henrik Schwartz is also something I love.

Right let’s talk about Ibiza. If you were to flog Ibiza to me as someone who hadn’t been there before, what would your sales pitch be?
Well, a salesman should be able to pitch his product to a wide range of demographics. If I were pitching it to a clubber, say 20 – 30 years old, I’d say the place is just hedonistic mayhem, some of the best clubs in the world. Everyday of the week you can see some of the best DJ talent in the world. There’s sex from wall to wall. All the things that pump your nads when you’re a kid! Music, sunshine beach, the opposite sex! Just the concoction of the whole place is just electric. When you are done with that and when you just can’t take anymore, there’s just the most serene, tranquil places that you can go. You get over the fact that you’ve obliterated your body for 48 – 72 hours when you can kick back, chill and recuperate. If you were older, I’d say if you want to reminisce back to when clubbing was the main thing in your life, there’s great clubs you can go to in Ibiza. You can go to Pacha, you can go on the terrace, you can go into the VIP. You can still feel good, and still feel comfortable doing it. Then there’s great shopping, great restaurants, great beaches. The one thing that Ibiza doesn’t have is sight-seeing, it’s not that kind of vacation. It’s just relaxation where you can have a great time!

That’s going to be my new pitch to the travel journos! Right, should I drive a scooter in Ibiza?
If you are in your twenties, and you think you are indestructible, then yes absolutely. But do it with caution. If you are my age, in your forties, and feeling a little bit mortal, don’t go anywhere fucking near it!

Should I swim in the sea?
Yes you should swim in the sea. It’s an amazing feeling to swim in the ocean, you feel absolutely free. But beware of the jellyfish! The island does get invaded with those and it’s pretty nasty when they sting! No sharks though.

Right lets talk about hit records. Is Ibiza the breeding ground for hit records? Is that where you go to look for them and if so, how does it work?
Yes we do go to Ibiza and try and look for records. Anytime we go out, anywhere in the world, we are always listening to what DJs are playing. If something stands out, we are always interested in whatever that record may be. You have a concentration of that in Ibiza, because you are hearing club music everywhere. It’s absolutely incessant and covers a wide variety of things too. That’s the great thing about house music. Are there records broken out of Ibiza? I think those days are over because the internet makes things happen so fast. If a record is played in the States, it can be played in Ibiza the next day, Japan the day after and Australia the day after that. So records seem to happen instantaneously across the world, rather than coming out of one place. So I don’t know if one place breaks music at all in these times.

Let’s talk about Pacha. You’ve got every Saturday at Pacha. For you is it more of a prestige thing or not? What does having a party at Pacha say about your brand?
Whatever you do in life, if you are proud of what you do you want to play on the biggest stage, you want to be noticed. Even people who say they are cool, and underground and they don’t want to sell out, most of the times I don’t believe it; they are screaming to be noticed! I think that we’ve done a really good job at Defected by working and nurturing some great producers, giving dance music some great house records. Whilst I’m not preoccupied by having the recognition and the acclaim, I do want to be recognised for the hard work we do. It’s good for the soul to know that people appreciate what you do and I think that to play at Pacha in Ibiza every Saturday night just puts all of that into one moment! It is undoubtedly one of the biggest, if not the biggest club in the world. They’ve got clubs in various places but the spiritual home of Pacha is in Ibiza. It’s been there since the seventies; close to forty years. You feel the history and heritage when you walk in there. You know, if you are a footballer, you’d want to play for Barcelona, if you are running a night, you’d want to be at Pacha. That’s the level it’s at!

Ok, about the party. Two things, what is the theme and who are the headliners you want to talk about?
It’s been difficult to come up with a novel and interesting theme for the year, but I think some people try a little too hard in that department. We have a constant message that at Defected, we are a great Saturday night out, we’re a disco label, it’s all about the party and people having a good time. That has been constant for the 10 or 11 years that we’ve been going, so Saturday night is about the twist that we have on disco. This year, we’ve kind of gone for trashy disco, it’s kind of en vogue and fashionable. Headliners this year… We support the people who make music for our label, we support them 100%. It would be easy to go “this kids hot,” or “all the kids are loving this producer” but if he has nothing to do with the label then we are just doing it for all of the wrong reasons. I believe we have worked with the producers for as long as we have because we give them as much as they give us. Therefore, our lines ups are based on the artists we have at the label. Obviously we work with new people as the years go by like Chocolate Puma playing for the first time this year. We have Riva Starr, a lot of people are talking about him. We have Quentin Harris back in the house and the fact that we have diversity in our night, keeps our night fresher than most of our competitors.

Good! Let’s talk about the mix. Defected In The House Ibiza is now an institution. What have you done this year, to make it the best mix yet?
It’s really difficult putting together a compilation these days because there’s just not the diversity or the craftsmanship or the soul put into production these days. So you really have to dig deep to find twenty or thirty tracks that actually work. Also there are some political things that restrict you from using the tracks you want to use. You know, the label doesn’t want to license them, if it’s someone signed to a major label, they are really going to restrict your rights where you are going to be able to release it and so on. So you can’t always have the tracks you would love to include, so again just really drumming home the fact that we support the people we work with. We work with them because they make quality productions and their sound epitomises what Defected is really all about. I’d go to our DJs first, see what they’ve got and then add more tracks to give the compilation more depth and value.

So what are these other tracks you are talking about? Tell me about the tracks from the producers you want to use?
Well, 70% of the album is our current material, which is what most compilations are these days, unless it’s specifically a retro compilation but Ibiza has never been about that for us. It’s been about putting some upfront and current tunes on there, but there are a couple of classics too like MK ‘Burning’. MK’s sound has been ripped and a lot of producers are borrowing what he used to do 15 years ago, so it’s really good to include a track like that. Plus we have Arther Baker ‘The Brake’ which was released maybe 20 years ago, but the version we have put on was released in 1998. It’s just a really good percussive house track. Tensnake ‘Coma Cat’ is a deeper and disco based, it’s a well-crafted and quality production. There is also Azari and III ‘Reckless With Your Love’ which is just an emotional and soulful house record. For me these tracks give it a little bit more depth, and the rest is just quality Defected house music.

Ok, so exclusives?
There are actually a number of exclusives for the compilation. Shapeshifters ‘Helter Skelter’, ATFC Featuring Rae ‘It’s Over’ which is the biggest track I play these days with the exception of ‘Hey Hey’. I say 70% of the compilation is exclusive to Defected In The House. Some of the tracks may be released as singles, but most of them, this will be their first time on a compilation.

Simon, when will you stop DJing?
It’s kinda weird actually. After every bad gig (and there’s not many of them these days), when you’ve travelled and you’re in a hotel, and you know your sets gone down badly, you just think ‘What am I doing here?’ I’d rather be with my family, having a good meal, watching the football, anywhere. Bad gigs are a real downer, so I think about stopping after every bad gig, but then when you do a good gig, you remember how much you love it. So while the gigs are still great I’m happy to carry on DJing.

All you need to know about the new Pioneer masterpieces CDJ2000 & CDJ900

CDJ2000 FAQs

Do the hotcues work in the traditional manner?
Yes; press record to enable recording, press the hotcue to store it, press record to disable recording. There are no plans to change this method.

Is there an auto-loop on the CDJ2000?
Yes, it creates an automatic 4 beat loop when you press the 4-Beat Loop button. You can use that button again to cut the loop in half, or hold the LOOP OUT button while pressing it to double its length.

How does the jogdial compare to the jogdial on the CDJ-xxx?
Personally, I have found the 2000′s jogdial to be smoother than a CDJ1000MK3.

Do the lights on the edge of the jogwheel move like the CDJ-400?
No, they are fixed and will blink when a track has 30 seconds remaining, strobe when there are 15 seconds remaining.

Does the CDJ-2000 support DVD-R playback?
Yes. DVD data discs, so you can burn countless amounts of MP3s or WAV files onto it.

Does that mean the CDJ-2000 will play DVD music video (like DVJ)?
No. DVD data discs only

CDJ900 FAQs

Does the CDJ-900 support DVD-R playback?
No, only the CDJ-2000 (and MEP-7000) supports DVD data discs.

How does the jogdial compare to the jogdial on the CDJ-xxx?
Personally, I have found the jogdial on the CDJ-900 to be about the same as the CDJ1000MK3.

What is “Slip” mode?
When you engage slip mode, using the player to loop, scratch or reverse will maintain the realtime play position of the audio as if you had never entered those modes. In other words, if you were to create a loop of “1, 2, 3, 4″ and loop it once, while the loop is playing, you don’t hear the song progressing through “5, 6, 7, 8″, and when you exit the loop, the next thing you hear is “9, 10, 11, 12″.

Does the CDJ900 display have a waveform?
It most certainly does!

How can I tell where the current play position is on the waveform?
There is a dot below the waveform and the current vertical bar of the waveform blinks to show the current position, but the waveform lines up above the playback position indicator in the lower display for a quick approximation.

General FAQs

Do the players have an international warranty ?
No. The product is warrantied for the country of purchase (with a possible exception for the EU; I would have to confirm that). The warranty period is one year from date of purchase.

I have a roadcase for my CDJ-xxx, will the new player fit?
CDJ-2000: 12.6″ x 15.94″ x 4.19″
CDJ-900: 12.6″ x 15.25″ x 4.19″
CDJ-1000: 12.6″ x 14.6″ x 4.1″
CDJ-800: 12.0″ x 13.0″ x 4.3″
DVJ-1000: 12.6″ x 16.0″ x 4.3″
(Measurements are W x D x H)

These dimensions should give you a good idea but case designs vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and they may not provide adequate room for your cables or the new raised display design.

Does it have a universal power supply?
No. It is recomended that you purchase your unit in your own region as the voltage is region-specific.

Can the angled screen be moved up or down?
No, the screen is in a fixed position.

Is it a touch-screen?
No. You’d have to show even less information on the display (larger items) for the touch to be accurate, especially after the DJ has had a few drinks. The rotary knob and the strip make it easy to locate tracks.

What is the half-frame feature and how does it work?
CD-audio breaks every second down into 74 frames. This can cause for imperfect loops when the peaks and valleys of the waveform don’t line up or the loop is simply too long or too short for a perfect number of frames for that tempo. Pioneer has developed a method of interpolation to allow for half-frame timing. This effectively breaks every second into 148 pieces allowing for smoother and more precice loops to be created. The half frames are shown in the display as .5 and the half-frame feature is available for all audio sources, not just CD-audio.

How does the player history work?
The player automatically creates a history list of all the songs you play and allows you to import that playlist into rekordbox. You can then review the track list from that session or you can edit the playlist and re-order tracks to play them again in the future.

How quickly can I scroll through a long list of songs?
The rotary knob uses an accelerated rotation mode; if you turn the knob slowly it will move line-by-line. If you rotate the knob quickly, the selection line skips many lines depending on the speed of rotation. There is also a speed-scroll; by pressing the knob down for a moment, the display will indicate the new mode and you can quickly zip through thousands of files by jumping by letter / number.

What filetypes do the players support?
MP3
WAV
AIFF
AAC (unprotected)

No FLAC support?
Sorry, I wish it did too!

What about m3u Playlist files?
There is no support for m3u files. The rekordbox software will allow you to quickly and easily create and manage playlists.

USB Sources

What format USB drives will the players support?
FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, HFS+. There is no NTFS support planned at this time, sorry.

What is the maximum capacity drives the player will support?
What’s the biggest drive available today? That’s still not the maximum. The SD cardslot will read SDHC, which currently allows for a maximum of 32GB (or 2TB depending on who you talk to and what will eventually be available on the market).

Is the load time slower on larger drives?
Yes, but not significantly. The difference between 4GB and 1TB is minimal, even if the drive has not been prepared using rekordbox.

Do I have to prepare all my music with rekordbox?
You don’t have to but you will benefit from faster track load times and a complete waveform on-demand if you do.

How can I quickly search through the massive amounts of music I have on my drive?
There are a few options. First, there are several sort modes:
- Album
- Artist
- Bitrate
- BPM
- Color
- Comments
- Date Added
- Filename
- Folder
- Genre
- History
- Hot Cue Bank
- Key
- Label
- Original Artist
- Playlist
- Rating
- Remixer
- Time
- Track
- Year

(Through rekordbox, you have the ability to re-order, enable or disable most of these sort modes.)

There is also the ability to search via keywords. The letters can be quickly entered using a “soft keyboard” which is displayed above the Needle Search strip.

Please note that for many of these methods you must analyze the tracks via the software in order for them to work.

Can I connect a USB keyboard?
Keyboards are not currently supported by the player.

Can I connect a USB hub?
USB hubs are not currently supported by the player.

Link

What is the Link function?
The link function allows the players to communicate with each-other and share audio from one connected drive.

How do I connect my decks for Link?
You can connect 2 decks directly from one to the other with a CAT5 cable or if you’re using 3 or 4 decks, connect them via a standard network hub or switch.

Can I mix and match CDJ2000′s and CDJ900′s to use the Link feature?
Both the 2000 and the 900 have the link feature which allows you to use any combination of the players without limitation of the functions therein.

Can I connect my CDJs to my laptop via the ethernet Link?
Yes, but this would only allow you to send data to the players. To use the players as soundcards you require a direct USB connection to each player.

How do I load a track using the link?
Just as you would select the USB or CD as a source, you can select Link and browse or search the songs from any other player just as if they were loaded on that player.

Can I “send” a currently playing song to another player?
While this is not a currently available feature, it may be supported by a future firmware update.

Do the CDJ’s cache songs on the deck? If I disconnect the the laptop or hard drive, will the song keep playing?
No, the audio is not cached on the player. Removal of the source or disconnection of the Link will result in audio stopping after the buffer has run out. (The buffer refers to the amount of audio stored by the players for scratch and seek functions.)

Which sources can I “Link”?
You can link USB and SD sources.

Are the HID’s and sound devices networked? (If I Link two players and connect the USB from only ONE of those players, can I use the soundcards of both through the Link?)
You require a USB connection for each device you wish to use as a controller / soundcard.

Does it network your saved CD cue points??
It doesn’t seem that way, with the current firmware, the player requests a USB drive be connected to the host player of the CD in order to store the memory point.

rekordbox

Does it come bundled with the players?
Yes. recordbox is included on a CD with the CDJs.

Is it free?
NO

Is it Mac compatible?
Yes. It runs on Mac OSX (Tiger, Leopard, Snowleopard), Windows (XP, Vista, Windows7) – including all 64 bit flavors of the Windows line.

Do I need to use rekordbox? What do I gain by using it?
No, you don’t need to use it. The advantage to using the software is it allows you to build a library (database) on your device which pre-reads waveforms for the audio (meaning the player doesn’t have to do it) and makes searching and browsing tracks faster and easier. In order to use the quantize function on the players themselves you must have the tracks analyzed first.

Will rekordbox work with other players like the CDJ-400 or MEP-7000?
Sorry – the new software was designed with the next generation of players in mind, starting with the 900 and 2000.

Do I use rekordbox as my music source or do I have to put everything on an external drive?
You have the ability to do both. The software can be used as a central hub, allowing you to drag-and-drop songs to the players connected, or you can export audio from the laptop to a flash drive / hard drive for use directly with the players allowing you to leave the laptop at home.

Can the software create automatic loops?
There are currently four buttons allowing for 4, 8, 16 or 32 beat loops to be created automatically. Manual loops are created the same way as on a CDJ, or you can enable the quantizing system which assists in snapping the loops to the beat.

Does the beat grid quantizing allow for songs with a variable tempo, eg. old disco songs with a live drummer?
Currently no but this may change in a future update.

Can I prepare or modify playlists without the software (directly on the players)?
The current firmware doesn’t allow for modification of playlists stored on your drives (although you can change the display order via several sort options). You can use the Tag List mode to create a playlist on the fly on the unit itself.

I noticed that there is a “Key” field in the software. Does it automatically detect the key of my songs?
No, sorry, you can either enter that information manually or use a 3rd party software to detect the key automatically.

Other Software

What is HID mode?
HID (Hardware Interface Device) mode allows the player to communicate bi-directionally with the computer in order to send control signals (eg. play, fast-forward, scratch, loop), and receive information (track and time data for the display, loop status for the LEDs). You no longer need to use timecode / control discs as the information is built-in.

Is HID better than MIDI?
Yes; bi-directional communication, higher resolution message capability and lower latency.

Will it eliminate the Serato box?
No. The SL-1, SL-3 boxes or other “embedded” products (eg. TTM-57) are the hardware output required by the software to operate. I know there was a video which made it seem like you could leave the Serato Scratch interface behind but it is a dongle for the software! Without it, Scratch Live does NOT operate!

Do I need a soundcard when using these players with other software?
Serato Scratch Live is currently the only software which ties the user to a specific hardware interface. For all other applications (eg. Traktor, VirtualDJ), you can use the soundcards of your choice, including the CDJ-2000 or CDJ-900.

But Traktor only allows me to use one soundcard, how can I use the soundcards in two players as my outputs?
Currently you must use a software application such as ASIO4All to merge multiple ASIO devices into “one” driver (as visible by software). It may well be that NI updates the software to allow for multiple soundcards, thus eliminating the need for 3rd party software.

Can I import my playlists or memory points from my current software?
The rekordbox software in its current beta state will only import from iTunes. It may be possible in a future version to import data from other software.

I didn’t see anything on these players that my favorite DVS can’t already do.
Can your software operate without a laptop?

Are you on the road, on the airport waiting, or somewhere else with loads of time and want to check out new tracks for playing at your gig at the weekend? Traxsource has its own web app now. Simply go to

And click the “Add To Homescreen” button to make it accessible as an app on your iPhone.
Our test worked well. We used a WLAN and it went pretty fast. Of course you will need a flate contract, if you listen to the samples on the road. It’s a good thing if you want to check out a selected number of tracks. We still prefer the main website if you. But it’s a really good thing, if you hear a track in a club somewhere and want it to search it, now you can do with this app.

Dennis Ferrer talks on his blog about his new single 'hey hey' and gives some tipps for all producers

We heard Dennis’ new single at the Vocal Booth weekender in Spain. The reactions were great. Today we bring you some news about this new track and some production tipps by no other than Dennis Ferrer himself:

“So here it is….the record is called Hey Hey!! I wrote this about the first time someone meets someone that piques your interest in the street. You walk by and someone grabs your attention. Most of the time you don’t want it but occasionally you’ll entertain someone and if the stars align right…well you hook up. Sometimes it turns out bad and you reflect and you tell yourself…DAMN! why’d i do that in the first place. That’s the thought that went into this when i wrote it.

I had a difficult time looking for the right person to sing this song as it wasn’t the generic vox record of old. I needed an edge. Someone who’s voice had personality. I think I found it with this artist.

The record is definitely different and might take ya a few listens but I hope you enjoy as it comes from the heart.

Production Points for my Peers. NOTE** if your just regular folk you DEFINITELY want to bypass this whole mumbo jumbo ROTFLMAO! :

Lead vox was done through a Neumann U67 into a Neve 1064 lightly compressed @ 4:1 slightly fast attack..med/slow release on a Tubetech CL1B modified with Mullard tubes.

Chorus voxes was Me, Vivien Goldman (the wonderful professor of post-punk at NYU who also wrote and performed the 1981 post-punk classic “Launderette”) and Dominique Keegan of The Glass. They were done through a Neumann U47 in Omni( cuz we were scattered around the booth..cardoid would’ve sounded weird..too focused on one particular person) into a Neve 1064 and compression was done through a Purple MC77.

Kick/Bassline relationship was a MAJOR pain in the ass. If the kick was too loud then the hook that kept everything together would just fall apart and vice versa. I finally figured out that I would have to sidechain the bass with a compressor so that when the bass would hit at the same time as the kick…the kick would duck out the volume of the bass at that precise moment to prevent an annoying buildup of some frequencies. I tried it with UAD comps…to no avail. Simpler was better and Nuendo’s basic compressor did the job quick and dirty.Cubase also has that sidechaining ability with it’s comp..so if you have that check it out. At the end of the day I had to forget about it being pounding and rely on the song. Since in reality it’s all about her.

The crazy riff in the middle to the end was done with a Juno 106 vst plug in. It’s just white noise with a bit of tone in it. I ran it out to my ATS-1 Tape simulator to give a bit more edge and weight. Then back into Nuendo. It’s kind of obnoxiously loud..but that’s the point. Sometimes perfect ain’t perfect.

fx were done with Altiverb and some TC6000 and Lexicon 960L impulses…you have to get these from another vendor as audioease doesn’t have them.
The delay on the lead was from UAD’s Cooper Time Cube…which is excellent at short delays. That’s all i put on her..I swear. No reverb..nada..just a 1/8 note delay that’s barely audible…more so when she kicks it up a notch in volume.

quick note…all my tracks when recorded NEVER went above -16dbfs . 0db in your DAW is NOT 0db. Get that right yall. Depending on your converters -16 to -20dbfs is 0db on hardware. If you record and mix higher than that then you are pushing your converter and mixes past the limit AND that’s why people think digital sounds harsh. If you are rendering in the box then make up the gain on the mix buss with a limiter/maximizer and don’t go above (-0.3).”

Wanna know what the DJ is playing? Just get Twitter!

Richie Hawtin was using it for a while now: a Twitter application that real time sends his in Traktor Pro played tracks to his Twitter page. The application could be downloaded for a few weeks without any notice, but today the press release followed. The application is now available for any other dj. Pretty usefull if you want to keep your mouth shut when someone asks you what track you’re playing.

The application is developed completely by Minus, and then tested by mister Minus himself. Minus says that the application helps smaller labels to get the attention they deserve and thereby gives them more income. It also should open a path to where the artists who’s tracks are actually played in a club get the money of the rights, instead of it going to the Madonna’s and U2’s of the world. You can download the application here.

Now it's official. The new Pioneer Gadget is a new CDJ. But it's not an MK4. Pioneer really made a new instrument for the djs.

Now it’s official. The new Pioneer Gadget is a new CDJ. But it’s not an MK4. Pioneer really made a new instrument for the djs. Not only for the CD DJs, but also for those playing with Traktor, Serato, etc. With the new CDJ-2000 you can play your CDs, but also have your Music on a USB-stick or a Portable HD (or Computer of course) and search for the tracks in the big screen on the CDJ. This makes djing much more comfortable. See what the other DJs say about the new CDJ-2000:

Sebastian Ingrosso: “I can still be drunk and navigate this… I think that’s the best of it
Steve Angello: “My favourite tool is the quantize tool…. to quantize the loop”

Also Roger Sanchez & Armin van Buuren love the new loop tool.

Have a look at all the reviews here:
http://www.djsounds.com/09/17/the-cdj-2000-natural-selection/

Official text by Pioneer:
Evolution. Changing times call for changing tools. That’s why Pioneer’s new multi-format player is the natural selection for the next generation of DJs. It’s been 15 years since the genesis of Pioneer’s first CDJ deck, which led to the world-beating CDJ-1000 series. Now it’s time for something completely new. Introducing a major leap forward for the club standard CDJ series: the CDJ-2000 – Pioneer’s new professional player for the digital age.

The CDJ-2000 fizzes with fresh DNA and can play music from multiple sources, including CD, DVD, USB storage devices and SD memory cards. It also comes with the revolutionary music database management software for DJs: rekordbox™. Based on Pioneer’s ‘Prepare & Perform’ concept, rekordbox™ works (for both Mac and PC) like the leading music database management software, but is more creative and more DJ-friendly. rekordbox™ allows DJs to prepare more before their performance and opens a door to tools such as Hot Cue Banks and Quantize, for perfectly synced loops every time. DJs can then export data to a USB or SD device to access vast libraries of music files and perform live – without the need for extra equipment or any inconvenient rewiring in the club. No need to burn CDs, simply take your USB device to the club, plug in to the CDJ and play. Through the industry-first Pro DJ Link, music files and database data on one single USB or SD device can be shared simultaneously by up to four players connected via LAN (local area network) cable. Plus, the data history of each DJ set is automatically saved and can be made into a playlist that can be loaded back into rekordbox™. Another key facet of the CDJ-2000 is its advanced HID (human interface device) and MIDI capabilities for native control of DVS (digital vinyl systems) via USB. What’s more, it achieves Pioneer’s highest sound quality to date through an improved audio output circuit, a new audiophile-pleasing Wolfson DAC processor, and a built-in 24-bit/48 kHz sound card.

Naturally, the CDJ-2000’s layout is related to its robust, reliable predecessor, the CDJ-1000MK3. However, although it fits easily into the MK3’s footprint, it ramps up performance with the largest (6.1-inch) clearest full-colour screen in the business. Below the screen is an industry-first waveform Needle Search™/Needle Drop ribbon, so that all the convenience of direct file browsing can now be found in an intuitive hardware format. Add to these features a highly evolved illuminated Jog wheel, and an overall enhanced design, complete with carry handles and Kensington lock, and you have the ideal digital innovation for total performance and seamless synchronisation.

‘DJing is increasingly about the endless creative possibilities opened up by digital Darwinism. Natural selection favours superior performance and those who can better streamline processes to channel the best of the software and hardware worlds. It really is all about the survival of the fittest. This new hybrid species of multi-player, our CDJ-2000, is thus an adaptable digital solution for the evolving needs of leading DJs,’ comments Mark Grotefeld, Head of Marketing (Pro DJ), Pioneer Europe.

CDJ-2000 KEY FEATURES
Fully compatible with a wide range of media formats
Besides regular audio CDs (and MP3 data CDs and DVDs) the CDJs can play music files that have been copied to SD memory cards and USB storage devices, such as flash memory and hard disk drives. Compatible file formats are MP3, AAC, WAV and AIFF (16/24-bit). Files on Tonium’s Pacemaker*1 can also be played when connected as a storage device via USB.

rekordbox™ database management software for DJs introduces the ‘Prepare & Perform’ concept
The idea behind ‘Prepare & Perform’ is that rekordbox™ works in harmony with DJs, allowing them to analyse, arrange, edit and export their music and data to digital media before their performance. Put simply, rekordbox™ offers an alternative to taking a laptop to the club. Not only does it function like a database for DJs (and is compatible with the leading music database management software through a bridge feature) but it also offers many more creative opportunities. DJs can prepare cue points, loops and Hot Cues in advance of their show. They can manage music files by editing tag information and artwork, while rekordbox™ analyses such track information as BPM and wave data. DJs can also edit beatgrids, which utilise the CDJ-2000’s new Quantize performance features, so, as an option, all cue points and loops can be set perfectly on-beat every time. In addition, users can create, edit and manage playlists in rekordbox™ and the CDJ-2000 creates a history playlist on your storage device of every track played for review when you next sync with rekordbox™.

Huge full-colour display screen leads the market
A bright, elevated 6.1-inch LCD enables DJs to acquire all information at a glance in the dark. And it’s not just about browsing directly though text, because artwork can also be displayed. Thanks to a combination of the GUI (graphical user interface) and a rotary selector, track browsing/selection is made super-quick and easy. Plus, for on-the-fly programming, tag lists can be created using the dedicated Tag button. Meanwhile, that all-important wave data is displayed with improved precision, so that high/low amplitude components can be grasped in the greatest detail to date.

Industry-first Needle Search™/Needle Drop for speedy searches and previews
This industry first reproduces digitally the action of needle dropping on vinyl. Needle Search™ lets you instantaneously preview music at any chosen point with pinpoint accuracy. Simply slide a finger along the Needle Drop pad while listening to the stuttered preview and checking the wave display to locate peaks and troughs. This tactile ribbon controller can also be used to conduct keyword searches.

Industry-first Pro DJ Link permits multi-play from a single source and file sharing among four players
For the very first time, DJs can connect up to four CDJ-2000s and rekordbox™ by LAN connection and instantly share music and data between the players. That’s one LAN hub, one USB storage device or SD memory card, and countless creative possibilities – multi-directionally reinforced.

Improved quality audio output circuit with Wolfson DAC processor
A high-performance Wolfson DAC processor allows audio to be reproduced with a lush analogue feel. Great news for audiophiles is the better signal-to-noise ratio, giving a massive improvement on the CDJ-1000MK3 processor, and a new hybrid operation amplifier circuitry that also minimises noise. The result is a clear, transparent sound that is faithful to the original.

Advanced connectivity with 24-bit/48 kHz sound card, HID and MIDI control via USB
The CDJ-2000 has a built-in sound card so no extra interface or unnecessary rewiring is required and connection is possible by using only one USB cable. Information can be output as MIDI to software and other MIDI devices via USB. The player can also be used as a MIDI controller. But HID control offers superior interfacing with software, beating MIDI with speed, audio/visual streaming and two-way information on displays. Consequently, the player can easily, precisely and natively control such DVS systems as Serato’s Scratch Live*2 and Native Instrument’s Traktor*3 series – without any need for time-coded discs.

Quantized beat loop for perfectly synced cue points, loops and Hot Cues
After music files have been analysed with rekordbox™, the Quantize function automatically corrects and syncs the beat during a manual loop or real-time cue in. This even works if the in/out point is off beat. There is also a convenient auto one-touch four-beat loop onboard, if required. And thanks to a new 0.5 frame step, there’s twice the resolution for setting even more precise cue and loop points.

An extra three Hot Cue Banks, available via the rekordbox™ playlist
Aside from the three Hot Cue buttons on the CDJ-2000 player itself, there are also three Hot Cue Banks to be found in the rekordbox™ playlist. This provides users with an abundance of Hot Cues to further extend the editing opportunities.

Advanced new Jog for smooth operability and greater feeling adjustment
The all-new club conscious Jog dial is illuminated in four different places. It’s also much quieter and smoother in operation, and has a far wider tension range when compared to the CDJ-1000MK3.

James Zabiela presents a new gadget by Pioneer which we believe is a new CD Player with direct search functions for the tracks on a External HD or Notebook

James Zabiela is one of Pioneers top testers and is featured always in the latest videos of Pioneers new gadgets. Now the big brand in DJ Gear has a new gadget coming up, released on Sept 17, 2009. What it is, that’s still a secret. Although Zabiela mentions that it would take DJing back to the roots. The new Pioneer DJ gear was designed for those who doesn’t want to burn cds anymore and for those who doesn’t want to stare at a laptop screen all of the time.
We think it’s a new CD Player which is able to search your library (Notebook, External HD?) directly.

Check Zabiela’s Video here:

With their DJM-5000, Pioneer has raised the standard for 19 inch rackmount mixers. The DJM-5000 brings some nice new tricks to the (mobile) DJ. It does NOT contain any beat effects like you’re used to have on the previous DJM-series mixers (DJM-600, DJM-700, DJM-800). It does features multi zone output, some great mic effects and a totally new Talk Over functionality.

The DJM-5000 offers great sound quality as it has the same basic circuitry as the DJM-1000. The analogue signal from the media player is digitized at 96kHz/24-bit, so it reaches the digital mixing stage in the best possible state. Mixing is then carried out by 32-bit digital signal processing with minimal deterioration of sound quality.

USB Audio Interface
You can hook up you computer (Mac & Windows) to the DJM5000, when you use Windows with the Asio driver, it can output 3 different audio signals directly to the mixer. There is no need for an audio card or to make lots of connections as everything is transported via USB. Make sure to select the proper audio output in your mixing software.

USB MIDI Controls
There are 61 different MIDI channels that can be controlled by various knobs, buttons and faders. The MIDI signal is transported to your computer via the USB connection.

By making the proper mappings to your software and selecting the right audio outputs you only need your laptop (without sound card) and the DJM-5000 to perform.

Zone Output
The Pioneer DJM5000 has lots of outputs: Master Output, Booth Output, Record Output and a Zone Output. The first three of these outputs need no explanations but the Zone Output is new for Pioneer.

With the Zone Output you can use the DJM to control the audio in 2 room independently from each other. You can set the Zone Output to Master to have the same sound on the Master and the Zone output. If you select any of the channel (1-4) you can send that channel to Room 2 to have some background music. In the main room you can use the Master output and the other channel to do your mixing.

Sound Maximizer
When used on some locations the sound might need some optimizing, this is what you can do with the Sound Maximizer. Mostly the Clarity and Dynamics controls will be near the Minimal position, only turn it on when needed to avoid distortions when playing at max levels!

Send/Return
This is one of the features that is included in all Pioneer DJ mixers and can be used to connect and external Effector like the EFX-500 or EFX-1000. This unleashes lots and lots of possibilities. Read the EFX-topics for more.

Microphone Section
The third microphone input can be found on Channel 1 so when used you have the full 3-band Equalizers to adjust the vocals. You cannot use the Microphone Effects on Mic 3 though. For ease of reading the following is for Mic 1 and Mic 2:

Output Routing
You can route each microphone to either the Master Output, the Zone Output or both. You can also assign both mic’s to different outputs so 2 people can actually say something in different areas with one mixer.

3-band Equalizers
Each of the microphones has a 3 band Equalizer for maximum control of the sound. Each band has a range of +/- 12dB.

Advanced Talk over
The on/off lever for the Talk over has changed to an illuminated push button. In NORMAL mode the Talk over reacts as you would suspect, it lowers the overall volume of the audio over the complete frequency range. This is shown is the diagram.

In advanced mode only the frequencies around the human voice (mid-range) are lowered while the low and high frequencies remain at their level. This way you loose less ‘drive’ at the dance floor.

Mic Effects
The Effect knob on the Microphone Channels control the amount of effect that is added. With the blue buttons you can select the type of effect that you want to add. You can only activate 1 effect at a time so the effect is used for both mic channels.

Reverb : Give a sound more ‘room’
Echo+Verb : Combination of Echo and Reverb to widen the sound
Octaver : Match vocals with current key
Pitch : Controls the pitch of the sound

Other Features
Offcourse all the standard features of a Pioneer DJM-series mixer are included aswell.

3 Band EQ and Trim per channel
10 LED VU meter next to each channel, Master and Zone
Microphone clip indicator LED
Cue (PFL) listening on each channel, Master and Zone
Cross Fader
Cross Fader Curve control (3 steps)
All channels assignable to each side of the Cross Fader
Mono/Stereo Switch
MIDI on/off switch
Zone and both Microphone channels can be turned off (muted)
Level Att. on backside for Master and Zone
