In an interview with Traxsource, Defected boss Simon Dunmore says:

“I wish that producers would take more time making records. There is too much bullshit substandard crap out there. If people took more time they would sell more records and gain greater profile, as it is there are just tens of thousands of records that all do the same thing, use the same presets and fight for the same few sales. It is not about music anymore, it is about technology. So the truth is that it lies with the producers. Someone has to break free from the mediocrity.”

Of course Simon Dunmore also has some advices for the current generation of labels and producers:

“Learn music, programme beats create your own vibe…. When you think you are done, go back to it again, road test it and then look for that extra 20%. Be a leader not a follower”

I would also say that there are WAY TOO MANY labels around. back in the days the labels did the pre-selection, so all you heard in the record store, was already aproved by the A&Rs, before it was pressed onto vinyl. but now as everybody can have a digital label – everythings is available in the stores and you have to do the selection…

Lele, totally agree! I think nowadays, as there are soooo many labels around, the download-stores should act like the A&R’s and preselect at least a bit – maybe not the tracks itselves, but the labels. What i’ve heard is that beatport tries to do that now… hope it’ll work!

@Ralph, maybe that’s a good idea, but a new label with ambition who wanna sell great music, have no chance then. Maybe the first 3 or 4 releases aren’t good enough, BP would cancel them. It’s a tightrope walk.
    Fundamentally, it’s a good idea

Maybe some producers or label A&R’s wanna discuss it here. come on people :-)
